The DASPU fashion label, invented and designed by prostitutes of Davida from Rio de Janeiro, was created in 2005 to strenghten the struggle of the prostitutes agains prejudice. After few months NGO Davida was threatened by lawsuit by DASLU- Brazil’s priciest clothing boutique – if it does not suspend use of the DASPU brand name. After being ridiculed by the press, DASLU drops this threat. NGO Davida is a civil society organization, founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, to promote the citizenship inclusion of prostitutes. The main tools of the Davida group are actions in the areas of education, health, documentation, communication and culture, at both the local and national levels. Mission of the Davida is to to create opportunities for the strengthening of citizenship for prostitutes, by organizing prostitutes as workers, defending and promoting their rights, mobilizing them and promoting social control. The Wedding Dress is a one-of-a-kind dress made out of towels and bed sheets from the “love hotels” of Rio de Janeiro. It made its debut on the DASPU catwalk at the opening ceremony of the 27th Sao Paulo Biennial. The project CODE:RED Brasil, DASPU is the product of a close collaboration between the P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Museum of Contemporary Art and the non-governmental organization Davida.
